New Challenge Seeks Direct Air Capture Technology for South African Chemical and Energy Company

Announcement
January 10, 2023

carbonNEXT is proud to partner with South Africa’s Sasol, a global chemicals and energy company, for a new Challenge in our award-winning SDG Connect series: DAC to the Future. Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology is projected to play a large role in achieving the net zero future.

Sasol is a global supplier to a wide variety of industries, comprised of three distinct market-focused businesses: chemicals, energy, and Sasol ecoFT. Their portfolio is underpinned by a transition to a lower-carbon future, with a proven track record in developing, commercializing, and integrating new technologies into existing value chains.

Through the DAC to the Future Challenge, Sasol is seeking solutions that will enable cost effective implementation of DAC and integration into the feedstock value chain at their Secunda facilities and for future licenses held by their business unit, ecoFT.

Successful implementation and integration of DAC into the existing facilities is required for Sasol to achieve its net zero ambition and realize its goal to innovate for a better world.

A successful solution will:

  • Be able to successfully integrate into the Secunda complex, and other Sasol processes
  • Offer integration of the captured CO2 into the feedstock value chain to produce sustainably sourced carbon products such as green chemicals, green petrol/diesel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
  • Be cost-effective
  • Ideally, be able to capture CO2 from both the air and point sources
