Amplifying Climate Solutions Through Earth Tech 2050's New Cohort

Announcement
November 1, 2024

As we launch the second cohort of Earth Tech: 2050, we are reminded that every step toward a net zero economy is not just important—it's essential. Accelerating cleantech ventures through this program is a transformative moment that drives change. In partnership with Social Innovation Canada, this nine-month impact accelerator equips innovators with the knowledge, tools, and access to capital they need to scale their solutions, pushing cleantech advancements into the mainstream.

When these ventures grow and their technologies take hold, they drive shifts in policy and legislation, shaping a prosperous, more equitable economy. This creates a powerful ripple effect—one where businesses thrive profitably and sustainably, all while contributing to a healthier planet and a thriving global economy.

Meet our 10 new climate tech startups:

Carbonova

Carbonova has developed a patented technology that converts greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane into high-purity carbon nanofibers (CNF) with lower energy demand and cost. Using waste heat and exothermic reactions, their process minimizes environmental impact and reduces reliance on natural resources. These CNF materials are used in sustainable packaging, building materials, and electronics, offering a greener alternative to conventional carbon sources. Carbonova’s innovation helps industries cut costs and reduce environmental impacts by transforming waste gases into valuable carbon materials.

Destiny Copper

Destiny Copper has developed a cleantech process to extract high-purity copper crystals (99.9% Cu) with minimal energy, drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Their patented technology offers a sustainable, cost-effective solution to meet growing copper demand for clean energy and electrification. By extracting copper from old mine tailings with low environmental impact, Destiny Copper helps address copper shortages while reducing the risks of tailings dam failures, positioning the company at the forefront of the green transition.

HEJMAS

HEJMAS has developed a patented technology that transforms bast fibers like hemp and flax into high-value pulps at 60% lower cost than conventional wood pulps. Their process reduces CO2 emissions by 88%, uses 80% less water, and requires 70% less power and time, all without harsh chemicals. HEJMAS offers a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional wood pulping methods.

NULIFE GreenTech

NULIFE's patented process converts high-moisture organic waste into bio-oil, biochar, and biogenic CO2, removing 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of bio-oil with no methane emissions. Unlike pyrolysis, it requires no feedstock drying and avoids costly sludge disposal. This carbon-negative technology offers a low-cost, sustainable alternative to landfilling, aligning with tightening regulations and growing demand for carbon removal.

TreeTrack Intelligence Inc.

TreeTrack replenishes ecosystems impacted by wildfires and deforestation using high-tech SeedPods, enhancing biodiversity and combating climate change by rapidly replenishing landscapes with organic fertilizer and plant-based binders delivered efficiently by hybrid drones.

VulcanX

VulcanX produces low-emission hydrogen at the same cost as steam methane reforming, using natural gas pyrolysis. Their patented reactor requires just 13 kWh per kg of hydrogen, keeping costs under $1.5/kg without relying on carbon sales. With a flexible heating system, VulcanX leads in clean, affordable hydrogen production.

Cytochrome

Cytochrome's coastal seawater reactors store low-purity CO2 by dissolving minerals, cutting capture costs by up to 50% and avoiding traditional injection risks. The reactors convert CO2 into stable bicarbonate while recovering valuable metals, offering a scalable, eco-friendly storage solution with no direct competitors.

Terraferno Geothermal Solutions

Terraferno's patent-pending Autonomous Flow Control Devices (FCDs) boost geothermal energy recovery by up to 80% while cutting drilling costs by 50%. Their innovative downhole solutions optimize well designs, reduce system needs, and make geothermal energy more efficient and cost-effective, transforming it into a major energy source.

Green Manganese

Green Manganese has created a water-based, closed-loop process to extract manganese, significantly lowering CO2 emissions and waste compared to traditional methods. This process turns low-grade ores and tailings into valuable products, cutting costs and reducing reliance on foreign sources while adhering to strict environmental standards. Their patented technology ensures a sustainable and competitive edge in manganese production.

Ontoly Carbon

Ontoly Carbon's software enables financial institutions and corporations to offer top-up financing for building decarbonization projects in exchange for certified carbon credits. Targeting residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, the platform creates a two-sided marketplace and registry for carbon credit transactions. Unlike competitors, Ontoly Carbon automates carbon market calculations, streamlining quantification, certification, and transactions. Its financial modeling ensures financing is critical for project feasibility, with AI integration set to help buyers select tailored projects.
