To better understand the opportunities and challenges facing Canada's transport sector, Foresight partnered with UnitedLex to develop a Forest Bioeconomy Landscape Study. Building off the insights from our Ventures to Value Chains report, this study analyzes innovation trends in the global bioeconmy ecosystem.

Originally published in 2024, this updated edition offers new insights into a rapidly evolving sector.

The global forest management market was valued at over USD $13.8B in 2024 and is projected to grow to USD $26.8B by 2033. Similarly, the global market for forest bioproducts is estimated to reach USD $36.25B by 2035. From new harvesting techniques to AI-driven forest monitoring to the use of residual biomass, innovation is accelerating across the forest bioeconomy.

Canadian innovators are well-positioned to lead. In 2022, Canada’s forest sector contributed over $33B to Canada’s national GDP. British Columbia alone has more certified forest land than any jurisdiction globally—except for Canada as a whole—and supports thousands of jobs each year.

Despite these strengths, Canada lags behind other leading jurisdictions—such as South Korea and the United States—in forest-related patent filings.

To remain competitive, Canada must not only foster innovation in the bioeconomy but also protect it through robust intellectual property strategies. Analyzing the patent landscape offers valuable insight into how forest bioeconomy innovation is advancing both nationally and globally.
