Paws, Pavements, and Progress: Cleantech Matters to Our Four-Legged Coworkers

Dog’s experience climate change at the ground level, from the water they drink to the pavement they walk on to the parks they enjoy, and (if your dog is anything like mine) to the grass they love to munch on. And while at Foresight we are busy demonstrating how cleantech adoption can enhance business productivity and build a better environment for us and for our children, we must to also consider the furry friends we love so dearly. 

In our internal “fuzzy-coworkers” Slack channel, I have the privilege of seeing my colleagues’ journeys with their beloved pets. From hiking the trails of BC, swimming in Ontario’s beautiful lakes, jumping in snow in Atlantic Canada, and helping them work inside on a hot day (shoutout to the cat parents), these photos are a reminder of our core mission. 1. Paving the Way to Safer Walks: Cool Infrastructure

Canada has experienced record-breaking heat in 2026, making daily walks challenging for pet owners and their dogs. Dark asphalt absorbs solar radiation, reaching temperatures that can burn paw pads in under a minute. 

Smart built-environment solutions are changing the game for pet safety. Reflective cool pavements and permeable surfaces lower surface temperatures, while high-efficiency heat pumps and cool-roof materials protect pets indoors without drastically increasing greenhouse gas emissions. By mitigating urban microclimates, these technologies turn scalding concrete into safe paths.

ChillSkyn (2025 Foresight 50 Honouree): Formulates passive radiative cooling coatings (PolyFrost™) for urban surfaces and roofs. Their technology reflects solar radiation and radiates heat back into outer space without consuming energy, drastically lowering ambient surface and building temperatures.

Evercloak (2025 Foresight 50 Honouree): Develops ultra-thin graphene membrane systems that replace energy-intensive chemical refrigerants in HVAC systems. Their technology reduces energy consumption in building cooling by up to 50%, making high-efficiency indoor climate control far more accessible. 

Intelligent City (2022, 2023 Foresight 50 Honouree): Utilizes mass-timber prefabrication and advanced building software to design carbon-neutral multi-family housing. Their passive design envelopes optimize thermal regulation, keeping indoor spaces cool during severe heatwaves.

2. Sniffing Out Danger: Wildfire Detection & Management

Climate-driven wildfires and toxic smoke have become a frequent reality across Canada. Mid-summer air quality alerts frequently force dog owners to keep their pets cooped up indoors to protect sensitive respiratory systems. By mid-July, there were 850 active wildfires across the country. In Ontario, over 180 active wildfires were reported, with roughly 69 classified as out of control.

At Foresight, discussions about keeping pets occupied during smoke warnings brought us back to a simple truth: dog owners shouldn't have to adapt to an unliveable baseline. Fortunately, Canadian ventures are deploying cutting-edge AI sensors and autonomous systems to detect wildfire threats early and stop blazes before they spread.

3. Clean Water, Healthier Pups: Smart Water Tech

What is really in your dog’s water bowl? National environmental monitoring shows that between 2022 and 2024, the proportion of Canadian river sites rated "marginal" or "poor" reached 23%—the highest level in a decade. From agricultural runoff to aging urban infrastructure, trace contaminants like heavy metals and microplastics are increasingly making their way into our shared water supply.

Municipalities play a key role by integrating advanced filtration and real-time monitoring into city networks to stop contamination early. Combining this infrastructure with smart home filtration provides a final line of defence, protecting you—and your dog’s—health.
